Social Security Adds New Phone Safeguards to Prevent Fraud

Social Security Administration Implements Advanced Anti-Fraud Technology for Phone Claims
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has introduced new fraud prevention technology for telephone claims, marking a significant advancement in Social Security service modernization while strengthening program integrity. Beginning April 14, 2025, Americans will have the ability to complete all types of Social Security claims via telephone, supported by sophisticated anti-fraud capabilities designed to protect beneficiaries and streamline the customer experience.
This advanced technology works by identifying suspicious activity in telephone claims through comprehensive pattern analysis and account anomaly detection. When irregularities are detected, individuals will be required to verify their identity in person before their Social Security claim can proceed. This methodical approach enables the SSA to maintain robust fraud prevention protocols while expanding accessibility for those unable to file online or visit an office in person.
“We are modernizing how we serve the public—enhancing both security and accessibility,” stated Leland Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. “These updates improve our ability to detect and prevent fraud while providing more flexible options for people to access their benefits.”
Security Enhancement and Social Security Accessibility Improvement
The policy update demonstrates SSA’s commitment to exemplary customer service, program integrity, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources. Key benefits of this new system include:
- Enhanced fraud prevention for Social Security phone claims
- Improved identity verification processes
- Greater accessibility for vulnerable populations
- Streamlined customer experience
Teams have been working diligently to develop and implement these Social Security safeguards, a process that has been accelerated by the return of employees to full-time in-office operations.
To accommodate the expected increase in call volume beginning April 14th, the agency is implementing surge capacity measures. Last month, SSA allocated $16.5 million toward modernizing telephone services nationwide.
This initiative aligns with the Administration’s broader efforts to protect Social Security and increase take-home pay for seniors through the elimination of taxation on social security benefits.
